Resuscitating a ‘walking dead’ organization: why a strategic plan remains the key to growth

Alex d’Arbeloff, a highly successful visionary and entrepreneur, is credited with the phrase “walking dead” organization. These, he said, are companies that “bring in enough revenue to keep going but never enough to take off.” In our experience, fully implementing a strategic plan is one near sure way to resuscitate a "walking dead" organization. Not sure what a strategic plan is, and why it might be right for you? The questions below represent many of the concerns we hear from clients when we discuss eliminating hurdles to growth.

What is a strategic plan?

A strategic plan is a road map for a business or nonprofit: where you are headed, how you are going to get there, and who is responsible for doing what.  Typically it’s a 10 to 40-page document that can be easily read and understood by everyone in an organization.

What’s the big deal about a vision? We need to focus on revenues

A well-crafted, short, ambitious vision can excite and engage employees, clients, customers, vendors and donors. Microsoft’s 1993’s vision was “a computer on every desk and in every home.” It seemed impossible at the time. And it excited and engaged everyone, and led to the creation of a multi-billion dollar behemoth.

How long does it take to develop a plan?

For many organizations, a very useful plan can be developed over the course of a few months, after conducting field research among customers, clients, target customer groups and staff. Typically plans are created as the result of a highly structured senior leadership off-site meeting. Plans for larger organizations may take up to 6 to 9 months.

What’s the ROI of a strategic plan?

In our experience, within 12 to 18 months after a plan has been fully implemented, top line revenues of a for profit organization should increase by at least 20%. Other benefits include a boost in collaboration among staff, and drop in expenses, generally because of the clarity around an organization’s focus and priorities.

How often should a strategic plan be updated?

In our experience, for profit organizations of between $5 million and $75 million will develop a plan that can guide an organization for 18 to 36 months. Nonprofit plans tend to run for about two to four years.

What are the common mistakes of companies that don’t have a plan?

We regularly find organizations that decided to make an investment in a new market segment without thinking through the strategies that support that business decision. The result typically is a cash flow shortfall, a drop in sales within its core market, and sometimes being forced to close.

A plan can really help avoid those types of mistakes?

Absolutely. For organizations that don’t plan, the common mode of operation is to go after the “low hanging fruit.” Our experience is going after the tougher challenges, if well thought-through, is actually better for any type of organization.

What about making sure the plan gets implemented properly?

Many businesses fail to thrive not because they don’t have a strategic plan, but because of failure to properly implement it. As part of the development of a plan, we also help ensure that the plan gets executed properly. The first step is ensuring that everyone understands how they plan will help their organization thrive so that they will embrace it. Once you accomplish that, your chances of success improve dramatically. We also schedule regular check-ins, which also ensures the organization moves forward.
